How to save on your energy bills [and your taxes!] by tinting your windows
by author on Nov.23, 2009, under Uncategorized
If you haven’t thought about tinting your windows with window tint or window film, here are many good reasons why you should think about it seriously. Window film, which can be from two to 7 mm thick, coexists of several layers of polyester film which is adhesive on one side and scratch resistant on the other side that will be exposed. It can be applied to glass or plastic. Depending on the film that you choose, the multiple advantages of tint are as follows:
UV protection: film blocks up to 99% off the ultraviolet radiation produced by sunlight. We are all aware of the harmful effect of UV radiation outdoors and the same considerations apply to some extent indoors This has the benefit of reducing heat buildup in the room and prolonging the life of carpets and furnishings by retarding the fading effect of sunlight.
Insulation for energy efficiency: in the summer, film reflects heat and helps to keep rooms cooler thus cutting down on cooling bills. In the winter, film promotes heat retention within the room thus reducing the necessity for heating. The air conditioning and heating requirements reduce and consequently the energy consumption and the power bills. The reduction in glare and heat also has a psychological effect in making the room feel cooler… the abundant availability of natural light means that less artificial lighting is required.
Glare reduction: the film is very effective in reducing glare making it particularly useful in rooms where reflection from TV or computer screens would be distracting. The viewing is therefore considerably improve with a consequent reduction in eyestrain
Safety and accident prevention: safety film holds glass together making it more shatterproof and preventing shards of glass from causing injuries. This is usually installed in areas prone to hurricanes or storms and also helps in discouraging burglars. Providing privacy: mirrored or frosted film provides adequate privacy by making it difficult for people outside to look in through the window. This will deter potential burglars from getting a look at the contents of your home At the same time, there is no impediment to light that enters the room.
The traditional way of dealing with these problems has been to put up heavy curtains or drapes and cutting yourself off from sunlight. Film offers an elegant and cost effective alternative solution.
Disadvantages: there are some disadvantages to window film that you need to keep in mind
- On certain kinds of windows such as double-pane low-emission
windows, the warranty may be voided by the use of window tint
- Damage such as a scratch is permanent and cannot be fixed
-plants that require lots of sun may be affected
Possible tax break: we understand that similar to insulation, certain window films purchased in 2009 and 2010 may qualify for a tax credit if the manufacturer provides the appropriate certificate. [Qualifying insulation systems are eligible for a credit of 30% of cost up to $1500]. You should however check this out with your tax advisors
