How to make life painless for yourself when moving with pets

by author on Nov.21, 2009, under Uncategorized

Moving house can be a painful and disorientating experience for all of us but have you ever considered how traumatic it can be for your pets.  Human beings have the capacity to understand and prepare for the experience but pets will often require extra care and affection.  However with a little planning you can make it easier and we will outline the steps both before and after moving that can help.

Before moving:

Give yourself plenty of time before your moving date to make your preparations.

- plan your travel arrangements to make it as comfortable as possible for your pets.  For instance, if you are traveling by air, familiarize yourself with airline regulations regarding pets and book a nonstop flight if possible

- keep pet routines such as feeding and walks as normal as possible and devote extra care and attention to your pets.  Cats and dogs can feel stressed and it is important to make them feel as comfortable as possible.

- ask the existing vet to make a final examination and provide you with copies of all the relevant records.  Ask his opinion about sedation and whether he can recommend a suitable vet in your new location

- arrange for suitable carriers for your pets whether you are traveling by air or by road, Give your pets plenty of time to get used to the new carriers and to be comfortable in them. On moving day, remember to pack favorite blankets or toys in the carrier.

- If you are traveling by road, remember to keep the interior of the car as comfortable as possible and plan to stop for plenty of bathroom breaks and walks.  Make sure that nothing upsets their stomach by taking along only the food and water to which they are accustomed. Many people make the mistake of taking along special treats or snacks that in combination with stress can produce stomach upsets.

- make sure that your pets are equipped with complete up to date identification tags and that you have an adequate supply of leashes and harnesses

After moving:

-  take your pet for frequent walks around the new neighborhood to get accustomed to the new surroundings and the new smells.  Take particular care to make sure that your pets are secure and have no opportunity to run away.

- avoid punishing them for the first few days and give them extra affection.  They might be disoriented or stressed or even ill from the journey and you need to give them plenty of time to settle in.

- If you have a cat, keep your windows closed to prevent escape. Cover   your windows with old curtains or bed sheets you can afford to sacrifice for the first few days till your cat settles in.

There are plenty of good animal transport services available and you could consider using them if your budget permits. This will allow you to concentrate on the other aspects of your move, secure in the knowledge that your pet is in the capable care of experts.
